What Do You Need to Know Before the First Cast?

Short answer: A zander hotspot is not a single structure, but a functional combination of prey, cover, visibility and accessible depth. An attractive drop-off on the map is only the beginning of the search.

What good is the best soft-plastic bait if the zander are holding in the wrong place? That is why the zander book begins not with lure color, but with habitat. Zander can use very different conditions in lakes and rivers. They may occur alone or in groups, change locations, or remain near a structure for an extended period.

Your task is not to find every fish in the water. You need to narrow down the number of sensible possibilities. Which zone offers prey? Which structure allows zander to wait with little effort? How far can they see the prey? And how can you reach that zone from shore or by boat?

How Does the Trophic System Help You Find Zander?

Short answer: The trophic system describes the nutrient availability of a body of water. It affects water clarity, vegetation, oxygen and prey availability—and therefore how zander live and where you can find them.

The model distinguishes several levels of water productivity. The point is not to pigeonhole your lake, but to recognize relationships:

A body of water can change and contain different areas with distinct characteristics. In a large lake, nutrient inputs, tributaries and bays can create different visibility and oxygen conditions. The trophic level is therefore a starting point, not a substitute for a map, fish finder and observation.

What Prey Do Zander Seek?

Short answer: Zander eat what their waters provide. Perch, ruffe, smelt, bream, roach, bleak and other fish are part of their diet, as are occasional crayfish, shrimp, leeches and other invertebrates. Availability, size and escape behavior are what matter.

A zander does not automatically follow every school of fish. It is selective about prey and may specialize depending on the body of water, season and its own size. In one studied Swedish lake, prey fish averaged about 7.5 cm; 95 % were smaller than 10 cm. This is a study finding from a specific lake, not a universal lure recommendation—but it explains why compact lures are often more sensible than the largest soft plastic in the box.

Prey distribution also changes. In one studied lake, smelt dominated across several age classes, while roach, perch or ruffe became more important at other times of year. In practice, this means checking which prey are currently available instead of relying on a popular lure color or one-size-fits-all size recommendation.

Zander can hunt in groups without every fish doing exactly the same thing. On your fish finder, therefore, observe prey, bottom and depth together. A single return at a drop-off is a different situation from a school of prey over hard bottom.

How Must the Lure Stay in Their Field of View?

Short answer: The lure does not need to move as frantically as possible. It must remain visible or detectable through the lateral line in the presumed zander zone long enough and move like accessible prey.

Reel-and-drop

With the reel-and-drop technique, you lift the lure off the bottom with one or two turns of the reel handle and let it sink again. Depending on the reel, a single turn can already cover considerable distance. The strike often comes during the fall. Therefore, monitor bottom contact and the angle of the fall instead of merely covering water quickly.

Jigging

When jigging, the lure is lifted more forcefully and guided back to the bottom. This can cover a larger zone, but it shortens the time the lure remains in the fish's direct field of view. Adjust the height of the hops and the pause to the depth, current and activity level of the fish.

Subtle Lifts and Slow Presentation

With subtle lifts, you raise the lure only slightly and keep it in the suspected zone longer. This is especially useful when zander are unwilling to move far or watch prey for a long time. Less movement can be more effective if it keeps your lure in front of the fish longer.

The book compares fishing methods by dwell time and lure activity. Vertical rigs and bottom rigs keep the lure in the zone for a long time but are not very active; reel-and-drop and jigging create more movement but leave the zone faster. The right method follows from this question: Do you want to cover a large zone or keep appealing to a suspected fish for as long as possible?

How Does a Zander See the Lure at Depth?

Short answer: The lure must enter the zander zone and stay there long enough. As depth increases, subtle color details disappear; outline, contrast, movement and pressure waves then play a greater role in whether the fish finds it.

The most important adjustment is therefore not automatically a new color, but the accessible visual zone. If your soft plastic runs below the zander, it may remain invisible despite having the perfect color. The falling phase is so important in reel-and-drop fishing because the lure passes through the suspected strike level instead of merely touching down on the bottom.

The lure-knowledge book describes how water and distance obscure fine details. In one experiment in green water, a blue lure lost contrast as depth increased, while yellow remained conspicuous longer in that setup; red appeared darker. Do not turn this into a rigid color rule. Use the finding to assess visibility, water color and contrast together first.

In low visibility, the lateral line supplements the eyes. A paddle tail generates pressure waves that can spread over several meters; a larger paddle can strengthen the signal and reflect more light. This helps when the zander cannot see the lure immediately. With wary fish or in clear water, more subtle action may look more convincing.

UV-active pigments can alter this impression depending on the water and depth, but they are no substitute for the right location. The sensible order remains: hotspot → prey depth → dwell time → contrast and action → color.

Why Do Clear and Murky Waters Change the Hotspot?

Short answer: In murky water, zander can take advantage of low visibility and their lateral line. In clear water, prey and predators see each other sooner; distance, cover, light and escape behavior then become more important.

Comparative tests involving perch and roach show that prey fish react differently in clear water than they do in low visibility. A zander cannot simply follow every prey fish unnoticed there. In clear conditions, perch and roach can detect the predator sooner, although the two species flee differently. In murkier water, the zander gains more time to observe its prey and launch an attack from close range.

This changes location selection: In clear water, shade, drop-offs, greater depth and distance from shore may become more important. In murky water, shallow areas, current zones and schools of prey may be productive even during the day. Dusk is a clue, but not automatically a productive time. Observe whether the prey actually moves into the expected zone under those light conditions.

Where Do Zander Hold in Lakes, Rivers and Reservoirs?

Short answer: In lakes, look for prey layers, drop-offs, plateaus and hard bottom. In rivers, look for current breaks, groynes, submerged points, scour holes and obstructions. In reservoirs, add the dam, water level and flooded structures.

In Lakes

In lakes, zander may hold in open water, along drop-offs, over hard bottom or near schools of prey. In clear lakes, do not limit your search to the bottom; prey in open water may form the actual hotspot. In murkier lakes, drop-offs, shallow areas and current influences may be more important.

In Rivers

In rivers, current is the decisive filter. Zander do not hold at every groyne in the same way. They use eddies, slack-water zones, hard bottom, submerged points, bridge pilings and holes scoured by the current. Each groyne must be assessed individually in relation to the incoming current.

A Russian study involving more than 50,000 zander found that in April and after the spawning season from June through October, approximately 85 % of the fish were primarily at depths of four to six meters. This finding is a strong search aid for comparable rivers, but not a rigid rule: temperature, light, prey, water level and the shape of the river can shift the depth.

In Reservoirs

Dams, inflows, old river channels, submerged humps and water-level changes create different habitats. When water rises, flooded banks can attract prey. When water falls, fish often concentrate along drop-offs, channels and outlets. Map not only the visible shoreline, but also the structure created beneath changing water levels.

How Does Their Location Shift Throughout the Year?

Short answer: Temperature, prey, spawning drive, light and water level shift their locations. Seasons give you a search direction; current prey availability determines whether it applies to your waters.

Spring and Spawning Season

As temperatures rise, shallow, calm areas and routes to suitable spawning grounds become relevant. In rivers, water level and very weak current can determine access to such areas. Check local closed seasons and protected areas before fishing a suspected hotspot.

Summer

In summer, depending on the body of water, zander may be active in deeper layers, near schools of prey, along drop-offs or at dusk. In stratified lakes, oxygen and the thermocline are crucial. Find the prey layer, not automatically the greatest depth.

Fall and Winter

As the water cools, food distribution shifts. Smelt, roach, perch and other prey may use different areas. Drop-offs, channels, hard bottom and stable winter holding areas become productive. Slow presentations help when zander prefer short movements; active searching remains worthwhile when the prey is mobile.

How Do You Turn This Into a Fishing Plan?

Short answer: First choose the type of water and structure, identify the expected prey, and then set the depth, lure size, presentation and angle. That way, after an unproductive cast, you know which assumption to change.
  1. Classify the water: Note visibility, nutrient availability, water level, current and depth.
  2. Select the structure: Justify choosing a drop-off, channel, groyne, submerged point, hard plateau or prey layer.
  3. Check the prey: Assess species, size, depth and escape behavior.
  4. Choose the presentation: Cover water by jigging/reel-and-drop, or present the lure longer with subtle lifts, vertical rigs or bottom rigs.
  5. Test angle and depth: Fish the suspected attack line systematically.
  6. Document: Record contacts, followers, prey fish and water conditions.

Progress does not come from buying more and more lures.
